To invert something is to put it in the opposite position, most often by turning it upside down: the bottom becomes the top. You invert a glass to let it dry. Photographers invert colours so dark becomes light. In maths, to invert a fraction is to flip it (two thirds becomes three halves). The core idea is always reverse the position, the order, or the direction. It is a slightly careful, school-or-science word; at home people often just say turn it upside down or flip it. Grammar teachers also talk about inversion when the usual word order is turned round, as in a question: Are you ready?
