Intoxication is the state of being drunk from alcohol, or affected strongly by a drug - your body and mind don't work normally, you might feel , say strange things, or lose your balance. It's a more formal, almost medical-sounding word - doctors and police reports use it more than everyday speech, where people just say 'drunk.' Intoxication can also describe a strong, feeling, like being 'in a state of intoxication' from happiness or success, almost like being drunk on joy, not alcohol.
