    The intestine is the long, winding tube in your body that food goes into after the stomach has done its first work. It is where a lot of the useful bits of food pass into the blood, and where what is left is pushed along and later leaves the body. Doctors split it into the small intestine (long and thin) and the large intestine (shorter and wider). In careful English, intestine is the body-part word; guts is the blunt everyday word, and tummy or stomach is what children say, even though those are not exactly the same part. You will see it in health class and at the doctor's, not much in stories. Though actually, older books sometimes used intestine as a describing word meaning “inside, not public,” but that use is rare now; the tube is the meaning you will meet.
