Here intervening is about time. The intervening years, days, or months are the stretch that sits between two events — after the first thing happened and before the second. “In the intervening years she moved abroad” means during that middle stretch of time. It is a quiet, slightly formal word; in speech people often just say “in between” or “during that time.” You will meet it a lot in news and history writing, where a writer jumps from one date to another and needs a word for the years in the middle. Though actually, the same spelling can also mean a person into a fight or a problem. This entry is only the time sense.
