Writers reach for it when they want that two-way picture — sleep and mood, family money and school results, climate and food prices. It is a quiet, essay-ish verb. In chat people usually say they are connected, or they affect each other. Though actually, some speakers use it as a fancy twin of relate, without the back-and-forth. The prefix is doing work. Relate can be one-way (this relates to that). Interrelate asks you to see both sides at once. You will hear it more in reports and classrooms than in the street.
