Interpenetration is when two things spread through each other, or when one thing spreads all the way through another, so you can no longer draw a clean line between them. You meet the word in serious writing — science, buildings, religion, essays about culture — not at the dinner table. “The interpenetration of the two styles” means each one has gone into the other, not just sat side by side. Everyday English is happier with mixing, blending, or overlap. Though actually, overlap can be only an edge; this word says they have moved into each other’s space. It is a heavy, formal noun. The matching verb, , is even less common in ordinary talk.
