1. 1

Internationalism is a belief about countries: they should not only look after themselves. They should work together, help each other, and not treat another nation as an enemy just because it is “other”. A person who holds this belief is an internationalist.

Internationalisminternationalism is a belief about countries是一種關於國家的信念: they should not only look after themselves認為國家不該只顧自己。They should work together應該互相合作, help each other互相幫忙, and not treat another nation as an enemy而且不要把別的國家當敵人 just because it is "other"只因為它是「別人」。A person who holds this belief抱持這種信念的人 is an internationalist就叫internationalist。

Though actually, the word is a little bigger than “be nice to other countries”. In it names a family of ideas, and people who all say they believe in internationalism still argue. Some want more open trade and more talking between governments. Some, especially on the left, want workers in every country to stand together, and they may dislike strong nationalism. So the - is a camp, not one tidy plan.

Though actually不過其實, the word is a little bigger than這個字的範圍比 "be nice to other countries"「對其他國家好」還要大一點。In politics在政治上 it names a family of ideas它指的是一整個系列的想法, and people who all say they believe in internationalism就算大家都說自己相信internationalism still argue還是會吵架。Some有些人 want more open trade想要更開放的貿易 and more talking between governments和政府之間更多的對話。Some, especially on the left有些人,尤其是左派, want workers in every country to stand together想要各國的勞工團結在一起, and they may dislike strong nationalism而且可能不喜歡強烈的民族主義。So所以 the -ism is a camp這個-ism是一個陣營, not one tidy plan不是一個整齊劃一的計畫。

It is a formal, serious word. You meet it in news, history, and , not in chat with friends.

It is這是個 a formal, serious word正式、嚴肅的詞。You meet it你會遇到它 in news, history, and politics在新聞、歷史和政治裡, not in chat with friends不會出現在跟朋友的閒聊裡。

A company with offices in many countries may boast about its “internationalism”, but that is mostly sounding grand — the tighter meaning is still a belief about how nations should act.

A company with offices in many countries一家在很多國家有辦公室的公司 may boast about its "internationalism"可能會吹噓自己的「internationalism」, but that is mostly sounding grand但那大多只是聽起來很厲害—— the tighter meaning is still a belief about how nations should act比較精確的意思還是一種關於國家該怎麼做的信念。

Do not mix it with international, which is only the adjective “between countries”. Internationalism is the belief.

Do not mix it with international不要把它跟international搞混, which is only the adjective那只是個形容詞 "between countries"意思是「國與國之間的」。Internationalisminternationalism is the belief才是那個信念。
