To intermix is to mix things together so they sit among one another. You can intermix two groups of students, or colours, or ideas. Though actually, mix does almost all of this work in ordinary English; intermix turns up more in careful writing, science, or when someone wants to stress that the mixing goes both ways, through each other, not just dumped in a bowl. It is very close to intermingle. Some speakers feel intermix is a little more about stuff and materials, and intermingle a little more about people — but people do not keep that line tidy.
