When things intermingle, they mix so that you cannot easily pull them apart again. People intermingle at a party when they do not stay in little groups, but move around and talk. Colours, smells, or ideas can intermingle too — they run into each other. Though actually, in everyday talk most people just say mix. Intermingle sounds a little more careful or ; you meet it in writing and in slightly formal speech more than in the playground. You can intermingle things (you mix them), or things can intermingle by themselves.
