An intermediary is a person or group that stands in the middle and tries to help two other people or groups agree. A friend who carries messages between two people who will not speak, a person who helps two companies settle a fight, a group that sits between two countries and keeps the talk going — those are intermediaries. The word is fairly formal. In daily life you might say go-between; in news and business you will hear intermediary a lot. Though actually, people also stretch it for anyone who passes something from A to B, not only for peace-making — a bank can be an intermediary for money. The sense here, though, is the who works toward an agreement.
