Interferon is a chemical your body makes when a virus gets in. Sick cells send it out, and nearby cells get ready so the virus cannot copy itself so easily. That is the main job: it does not kill the virus like soap kills on a table; it gets in the way of the virus spreading. Doctors also give interferon as medicine for some virus illnesses and some cancers, so you will hear it in hospitals and science class more than in the street. The name is close to interfere on purpose — though actually, in daily English interfere often sounds like bothering someone, and interferon is not that. It is a quiet body signal with a long science name.
組成interfere (to get in the way) + -on (an ending used for chemical things). Named because it gets in the way of viruses making more of themselves.
