- 1
This is the adverb. If you use two things interchangeably, you use one, then the other, as if they were the same. Students hear it most with words: people say two words are “used interchangeably.” You can also do jobs interchangeably, taking turns. It is a long, slightly school-like word. Though actually, “used interchangeably” is often a little loose — the two words can swap in many sentences, but a native speaker may still feel a small difference. The usual home for this word is next to a verb: used interchangeably, treated interchangeably.

With the ability of being interchanged or swapped.
- Traditionally, 'ticket office' seems to have been the preferred term in America, with Britain using the term 'booking office' (as an 1881 edition of The Railway Age Monthly and Railway Service Magazine explains). Today, the two are often used interchangeably (as the recent 'Save our ticket offices' campaign shows), with the term 'ticketing' perhaps capturing more of the point-of-sale transaction and issuing of tickets within stations.
