If speech, writing, or an idea is intelligible, other people can understand it. The words come through. A quiet voice can still be intelligible in a still room; a loud voice can fail in a storm. The word is a little formal. In daily talk you more often say “clear” or “I can understand it.” You will meet it in books and in talk about language. Though actually, intelligible does not mean the idea is easy or true — only that you can follow it. A hard idea can be intelligible if the writer is careful, and a simple sentence can fail if the speaker swallows the words. The usual opposite is unintelligible.
