Intaglio is the craft of cutting a design down into something hard — metal, stone, glass — so the picture sits in a hollow, not on a bump. The cut design is also called an intaglio. Printers fill those hollow lines with ink, press paper onto the plate, and pull a print; many old stamps and were made this way. Gem cutters do the same on a small stone, often for a ring or a seal. The opposite idea is relief, where the picture stands up. This is studio and museum English, not café English. As a verb it is uncommon: to intaglio a plate is to cut it this way.
