An insurmountable difficulty is too large or too hard to deal with — you cannot "get over" it, as if it were a wall you cannot climb. It is a formal word, common in news, school essays, and speeches. People use it for problems, odds, barriers, and obstacles, not usually for people. It is very close to ; insurmountable is the one you will hear more often. Though actually, speakers sometimes say insurmountable when they only mean "very hard," and then later they find a way. In the strict sense, it means there is no way over.
