Insulating describes material used to stop heat, electricity, or sound from passing through or escaping. Insulating material in the walls of a house keeps warmth in during winter. Insulating material around a wire stops electricity from escaping and shocking someone. And insulating material in a wall or ceiling can block sound from passing between rooms.
