Insufficiency is the state of not having enough, or of not being great enough for what is needed. There can be an insufficiency of proof, of money, of evidence, of vitamin D. Though actually, in ordinary conversation people almost always say ‘not enough’ or use the adjective insufficient. The noun sounds formal. Doctors use it a lot: if a part of the body cannot do its job well enough, they may speak of an insufficiency — of the heart, of a valve, of the kidneys. So students will meet this word in serious writing, reports, and medical English more than in chat. It names the gap: what you have does not reach what the situation asks for.
