    The insole is the inside bottom of a shoe — the part your foot rests on. People also buy extra insoles: thin pads, the shape of a foot, that you slip in for comfort, warmth, smell, or a better fit. In a shop you are almost always talking about those pads. The outside bottom that hits the ground is the sole, not the insole; that mix-up is very common. “In” here just means “inside.” Cobblers have a rare verb, to insole a shoe (to put an insole in), but almost everyone only meets the noun.
