    In baseball and softball, an inning is one of the chunks the game is cut into — usually nine. In each inning, both teams get a turn to bat (the top and the bottom). If the score is still even after nine, they play extra innings. The word is a kind of mistake that stuck. Cricket already had innings, and that form is singular as well as plural: one team's turn at batting is an innings. People heard innings, thought it was a plural, and cut off the -s to make inning for one time period. Baseball kept the new short word; cricket kept innings.
