Inner-city names the part of a city near the middle, but not the shiny shopping streets. In it is the belt of old housing where buildings look tired and many people have little money. Americans use it most; British English has it too. As a word it is often an adjective: inner-city schools, inner-city kids. Though actually, the tidy picture (middle equals poor) is tidier than life: some inner-city blocks are costly now, and some poor areas sit far from the middle. What the word still carries is a social smell — crowded schools, old flats, not the rich downtown. News English has also used it as a coded way to talk about race and crime; that is messy, and students deserve to hear that the word is not a neutral map label.
inner-city 指靠近市中心、但不是繁華購物街的那一帶，多半是一圈舊住宅區，建築看起來老舊，很多人收入不高。美式英語最常用，英式英語也有這個說法。寫成連字號時常當形容詞，放在名詞前面，像「inner-city schools」（市區學校）、「inner-city kids」（市區的孩子）。
