An inhalant is something you take in as a gas, spray, or — you breathe it; you do not swallow a pill. In a clinic it is often a medicine: a mist for a cold, for asthma, or a gas that helps you sleep for an operation (an inhalant ). The word also works as an adjective: an inhalant drug is one you breathe in. Though actually, in news and school health class, inhalants often means household chemicals — glue, paint thinner, spray cans — that some people breathe in to get high. That use is a warning, not a pharmacy word. In casual talk people more often name the device (the ) or just say “the spray.” Inhalant itself sounds medical or official.
