An inglenook is a seat by the side of a large open fireplace, or the little space that seat sits in — a corner built around the fire, where you can tuck yourself in and get warm. You meet this word in old houses in Britain, and in stories that want a warm, old picture. Though actually, most new homes do not have one; they heat the whole house another way, so the big open fire is gone. People still say inglenook when they talk about those old rooms, or when a new house tries to copy the look. It feels homely and a little romantic, not like a cold builder's term.
