Infringement is the noun: the act of going against a law, or of on someone's legal rights. One infringement is one such act. The phrase you will see again and again is copyright infringement — using a song, a photo, a film, or a piece of writing without the right to do so. Patent infringement is the same idea with inventions. People also speak of an infringement of privacy, or of rights. It is a formal, legal-sounding word; in a news story it points to a specific line that was crossed, not just “doing something bad.” Though actually, in ordinary talk some people use it for any unwanted push into their space (“an infringement on my time”), which is looser than the courtroom sense. Count it when you mean one case: an infringement, several infringements. The general idea of “this kind of wrong” can stay uncountable.
