Infowar is when one country, or one army, attacks another side’s computers as if that attack were part of a war — for example by sending a virus to stop networks, scramble data, or shut down power and communications. The point is not a teenager showing off; the point is to hurt an enemy. Though actually, journalists also stretch infowar to mean a fight made of rumours, leaked files, and loud stories online. This entry is the first, harder sense: the computers themselves are the battlefield. It is specialist language. In everyday talk people are more likely to say cyber attack or hacking, but infowar tells you the attack is meant as war, not only as crime.
