Infotainment is television — and now a lot of online video — that talks about real news and serious subjects, but packages them so people will enjoy watching: jokes, bright lights, fast cuts, a host with a big smile. The word is a squeeze of information and entertainment. A programme about money or health can still be infotainment if it is built like a show, not like a quiet lesson. Though actually, people often use it with a little bite: they mean this looks like news, but it is also trying to keep you on the sofa. It is not a children’s cartoon that teaches ABCs, and it is not a dry news hour with no fun at all. The messy truth is that a lot of commercial ‘news’ sits somewhere in the middle.
