This is the adverb: to an extremely small degree. A chance may be infinitesimally small; two results may differ infinitesimally; a dose may be infinitesimally larger than another. It has the same formal, slightly technical flavour as infinitesimal. People reach for it when they want “very slightly” to sound precise, even when they are not doing maths. Though actually, in casual talk it still just means “by a tiny, tiny bit.”
