    Inert describes something that does not move, does not react, or has no active energy. In chemistry, an inert gas (like or argon) does not easily react with other chemicals, which is why it's used safely in light bulbs or balloons. More generally, something inert just lies still and does nothing - an inert body, an inert volcano (extinct), or even an inert, lazy afternoon with nothing happening.
