Ineligibility is the state of not being allowed to have or do something because a law or rule says so. Not because you cannot, but because you do not qualify. Age, nationality, a past ban, a missed form, the wrong kind of visa — any of these can create ineligibility. Sports: ineligibility to play. Elections: ineligibility to stand. School: ineligibility for a scholarship. It is a heavy, official word. You will hear it from offices, courts, and sports bodies. In the corridor, people usually say “you cannot apply” or “you do not qualify.” Though actually, the tidy idea “a rule said no” is right; the messy part is that the rule may feel unfair, and people still use this calm word for it.
