If someone is industrious, they work hard, steadily, and with care. It is a praise word. Teachers, reports, and slightly old-fashioned English like it; a friend might just say hard-working. It is not about factories. Though actually, this is the trap, and it is a fair trap, because English industry first meant “hard work” and only later also meant “factories and business.” Industrious kept the old meaning. So an industrious child is a child who gets on with the job, not a child in industry. You can be an industrious artist or an industrious ant. The word does not care about machines.

組成From Middle French industrieux, from Late Latin industriosus, from Latin industria, which meant diligence — careful, steady work. The same Latin word later gave English industry in the factory sense too, but this adjective kept the “hard-working” meaning.
