Indrawn describes a breath you pull in quickly, often with a little sound. People do this when they are shocked, scared, hurt, or suddenly surprised — the chest jumps, and you hear the air go in. You will almost always meet it in a small set of phrases: an indrawn breath, an indrawn gasp. It is a describing word for the breath, not for the person. Everyday talk more often just says gasp or sharp breath; indrawn is a little literary, the kind of word a story uses when it wants you to hear the room freeze. Though actually, older books sometimes call a quiet, closed person indrawn too, as if their feelings were pulled inside — that is a different use, and not this one.
