An indented edge or surface is not smooth and straight. It has cuts, notches, or places pressed in: a coastline with little bays, a leaf with a edge, a tin with a thumb-mark, a key with bites along one side. The "cuts" may be neat, as if someone made a zigzag on purpose, or they may just be marks left behind. The picture to hold is a bite taken out of a clean line. People also say a line of writing is indented when it starts further in from the margin — same family of meaning, a bite out of the straight edge — but this sense is the physical look of the edge or surface itself.
