Incriminating describes something that makes a person look guilty of a crime. News and police reports love this word in front of evidence, photos, emails, statements. An incriminating message is one that hurts you if it comes out — it suggests you did it, or knew. Though actually, incriminating is also just the -ing form of the verb: this letter is incriminating him. In everyday talk, people more often say “that looks bad for him” or “that’s evidence against her.” Finding something incriminating is a strong hint, not a guilty verdict. You rarely call a person “incriminating”; it is usually the thing that points at them.
