Incontinence is a body problem: you cannot control when liquid waste (urine, wee) or solid waste (poo) leaves your body. It can happen to older people, to people after some operations or illnesses, and sometimes to children who have not yet learned that control. Doctors talk about incontinence of urine and incontinence of solid waste. It is a medical word. Doctors use it freely; patients use it too, though some people feel shy saying it. Though actually, older books also used incontinence for not controlling your wants — money, food, sex — but today, almost always, this word means the body-control problem.
組成From Middle English incontinence, from Old French incontinence or Latin incontinentia: in- (“not”) + the old “holding back / in control” family. Doublet of incontinency — same origin, rarer spelling.
