Something inconsequential is not important. It will not change what happens next, so you do not need to spend worry on it. A tiny mistake on a form. A wait of two minutes. Who sat where at lunch. The word is a little formal and a little cool: it does not only say “small”; it says “this does not matter.” You will meet it in writing, in meetings, and when someone is trying to calm another person down. People also use it of a person, a bit : an inconsequential figure is someone whose voice does not count. Though actually, a few careful writers still use it to mean “not following in a logical way.” Most people now just mean “not important.”
