Incarceration is the noun that belongs with : the act of putting someone in prison, or the state of being kept there. Five years of incarceration means five years inside. Research and news often say mass incarceration when a country locks up very large numbers of people. Same formal coat as the verb — at the dinner table, prison, jail, or time inside is what people actually say. The sense here is the prison sense. (Doctors also use incarceration for tissue that is trapped, as in a ; that is another job for the same spelling, not this one.)
