Inaptly means “in a way that does not fit the situation,” and it almost always describes how someone put something into words. If you compare two things inaptly, the comparison is a poor match. If a problem is inaptly named, the name points students the wrong way. It is a rare, formal adverb. In speech, people are far more likely to say “that is not quite the right word” or “that comparison does not work.” Though actually, because it is rare, even strong speakers sometimes reach for ineptly instead. Ineptly would mean “clumsily, without skill.” Inaptly keeps the idea of a bad fit, not bad hands.
