    Inanity is the noun that sits beside inane: emptiness of meaning, or a stupid, hollow remark. “The inanity of the speech” means how empty the speech was. “He uttered an inanity” means he said one pointless thing. It is a formal, slightly word. Though actually, English lets it work two ways: uncountable for the quality (inanity), and countable for a single empty remark (an inanity, inanities). In casual talk, people more often say “nonsense” or “rubbish.”
