A man’s inamorata is the woman he loves — his lover or sweetheart. English borrowed the word from Italian, so it sounds a little like a play or an old novel. People often use it with a smile, as if they are teasing. The male counterpart is inamorato. You would not write it on a form; girlfriend, partner, or wife is the everyday word. Though actually, it is not quite the same as “wife”: it points to romance, not to a legal title.

組成From Italian innamorata, the feminine of innamorato (“lover”), from innamorare (“to make someone fall in love”): in- (“in”) + amore (“love”).
