An in-joke is a joke that only a particular group will get. You had to be there, or you have to know the same people, the same story, the same game. To everyone else it falls flat, or they smile and do not know why it is funny. Friends, , and work teams collect these. Though actually people also say inside joke, and in many places that form is even more common; in-joke is the same idea in a shorter shape. It is informal. The joke is not always kind: sometimes it quietly marks who belongs and who does not.
