An in-joke is a joke that only a particular group will get. You had to be there, or you have to know the same people, the same story, the same game. To everyone else it falls flat, or they smile and do not know why it is funny. Friends, , and work teams collect these. Though actually people also say inside joke, and in many places that form is even more common; in-joke is the same idea in a shorter shape. It is informal. The joke is not always kind: sometimes it quietly marks who belongs and who does not.
in-joke 是只有特定一群人才懂的笑話。你要在場，或者要認識同樣的人、知道同樣的故事和遊戲，才會覺得好笑。對外人來說，這種笑話常常會冷場，對方可能只是禮貌地笑一笑，卻不知道好笑在哪裡。朋友、同學和工作團隊都很常累積這種笑話。
也有人寫成「inside joke」，在很多地方這個寫法其實更常見，兩者指的是同一件事，in-joke 只是比較短的寫法。這個詞屬於非正式用語。而且這種笑話不一定是善意的，有時它也悄悄地標出誰是自己人、誰不是。
