An in-group is a small set of people who feel they belong together. They like the same things, are friendly with each other, and quietly — or not so quietly — keep other people out. You hear it about a class, a club, a workplace, or a family circle: the people on the inside. In school talk it is close to a . Though actually teachers and books also use it as a more serious idea: we treat “our” group better than outsiders, even when we do not notice we are doing it. It can sound a little like classroom or news English; in daily talk people may just say “their little group” or “the inner circle.” The feeling is “us, not you.”
