In-between means in the middle — not this side and not that side. It can be a place, a size, a time, or a feeling, as when you do not fully belong to either group. As a preposition, English usually wants two words: The café is in between the bank and the school. The is more for the “middle kind of thing” meaning. You will still see both, and nobody at the bus stop is checking the .
