An impresario is the person who puts a show together and makes it happen — a play, an opera, a concert, a tour. They book the hall, find the singers or actors, handle money and publicity, and take the risk if nobody comes. It is an old-fashioned, slightly grand word. Today people more often say producer, promoter, or organiser, especially for pop concerts. You still hear impresario for opera, classical music, and theatre, and in newspapers when they want a colourful label for someone who has run many big shows. It feels European and a bit nineteenth-century; it is not a word teenagers use about a school talent night. Though actually, the job is close to a producer’s: the impresario is not usually on stage. They work behind the curtain.
