If the police or a court impounds something you own — a car, a dog, a pile of goods — they take it and lock it away. You do not lose it forever at that moment. They keep it until someone decides you may have it back, or you may not. A car left in the wrong place may be towed and impounded; you show papers and often pay a fee to get it out. Stray animals can be impounded too, in a pound, which is an old word for a closed yard. This is official language, used in news, tickets, and law. Friends do not impound your umbrella. Though actually, in daily talk many people just say they took my car and never use this word at all.
