When you do something impishly, you are a little naughty on purpose, but it is fun, not cruel. You break a small rule, hide a pen, or make a cheeky face, and people smile rather than get truly angry. The feeling is “I know I should not, and I am enjoying it a little.” It is not the word for real disrespect, bullying, or a serious insult; those are harder and colder. Writers like it for a grin, a look, or a small trick. In everyday talk people more often say mischievously or just describe the grin. Though actually, adults sometimes use it when they rather liked watching someone be cheeky.
