Impetigo is a skin disease you can catch from other people. It often begins as red sores, then scabs the colour of honey, especially around the mouth and nose. Children get it more than adults, because they touch faces and share towels. It is usually caused by already common on the skin, and a doctor can treat it. It looks ugly and spreads easily in a class, but for most people it is not a deep or dangerous illness. It is not a cold sore (that is a virus on the lip) and it is not eczema (that is dry, itchy skin, not typically those golden scabs). The name is medical Latin. Speakers still say impetigo at the doctor’s; parents may just say a skin infection.
