If an event or situation is impending, it is going to happen very soon. People reach for this word most when they do not like what is coming: an impending storm, an impending war, an impending deadline. You can almost feel something hanging in the air, about to drop. Though actually, it does not have to be a disaster. Writers also say an impending visit or an impending election, with no crash in sight — the unhappy use is just the one you will meet first. It is a news-and-writing word more than a talking word; friends would say it is coming or it is about to happen. The old verb impend is rare now. Almost nobody says the storm impends. We kept the -ing form and use it like an adjective before a noun.
