Impedimenta is a rather grand, slightly jokey word for all the things you are carrying or doing that you feel you need — bags, gear, extra tasks — but which actually slow you down. It was borrowed from Latin around 1600, where impedimenta was the baggage of an army: the stuff that follows the soldiers and can hold them back. In English it is not an everyday word. When people use it, they are often being humorous or literary: “the impedimenta of family life” might mean the buggies, bags, and snacks that turn a short trip into a long procession. Though actually, it sits next to impediment, but impediment is usually one obstacle (and, in “speech impediment,” a difficulty in speaking). Impedimenta is the pile of stuff.
