When electricity goes back and forth, as it does in the sockets in your wall, some things in a machine fight that flow. Impedance is a number that says how strongly a piece of equipment fights that back-and-forth current. People measure it in , the same unit as resistance, which is why the two words get mixed up. Though actually they are not the same: resistance is the simple fight that turns energy into heat; impedance is the whole fight, including the extra push-back you get from parts like coils and capacitors. You will see the word on headphones and speakers — a high impedance means the player has to work harder to make them loud. It is a science and engineering word, not a word for ordinary talk. An English and , Oliver Heaviside, gave this electrical meaning the name in 1886.
