    Impalement is the noun that belongs with impale: the act of putting a sharp point through someone or something, or the state of being pierced that way. In history books it often means that old, terrible punishment — fixing a person on a sharp stake. In modern English you also meet it in accident reports: “death by impalement.” It is a formal, rather grim word. Most people would not use it at the dinner table; they would say “a spike went through him” or “he was stabbed through.” Same picture as the verb, just named as a thing that happened. You almost never need this noun in daily talk unless you are reading history or a news report of a bad accident.
