When a tooth is impacted, it is stuck. It is trying to grow, but another tooth — or bone — is in the way, so it cannot come through properly. This happens most often with wisdom teeth at the back of the mouth. The tooth may grow at an angle, press on the tooth beside it, or stay buried in the gum, and a dentist may need to take it out. The idea underneath is 'pressed in tightly', not 'had a big effect'. Though actually, doctors also use impacted for other things in the body, but this entry is the tooth meaning.
